COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior midfielder Jeremy Sieverts tallied a hat trick for the Terps, but it wasn't enough as the third-ranked University of Maryland men's lacrosse team dropped a tough 13-10 decision to No. 8 Georgetown in front of 2,530 fans at Ludwig Field Saturday afternoon.

The Hoyas jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Andrew Brancaccio and Ryan Shuler, but the Terps stormed back with three-straight goals to take a 3-2 lead.

Sophomore Grant Catalino got Maryland on the board at the 10:25 mark of the first quarter with a goal from the left wing. Sophomore Ryan Young picked up the assist with a nifty feed from behind the cage after losing his defender with a couple of quick roll-dodges. Sieverts then scored back-to-back unassisted goals on similar plays; both coming off of dodges down the right alley.

Georgetown opened the second period with a man-up goal by Craig Dowd just 17 seconds in. Maryland capitalized on its own extra-man opportunity at the 10:27 mark when Sieverts buried another shots, this time from the left alley off of a pass by senior Dan Groot.

A pair of Hoya goals by Shuler and Jake Samperton gave the Hoyas a 5-4 lead with 4:29 remaining in the second quarter, but that lead would soon vanish thanks to a Groot goal at 3:36. Groot was double-teamed during a Maryland substitution, but he spilt the Hoya defenders and rolled into the left alley and got off a shot that beat Georgetown goalie Jack Davis.

The Terps took a 6-5 lead into the halftime break after senior Jeff Reynolds scored his first of two goals on a dodge down the left alley.

The third quarter is what turned the tide for the Hoyas. The two teams traded goals, making the score 7-6 in favor of the Terps with 11:47 on the clock. From there, Georgetown went on a 6-0 run to take a 12-7 lead with 9:42 to go in the fourth quarter.

Maryland refused to quit and scored back-to-back goals less than a minute apart to close the gap to 12-9. Groot scored his second of the game on a sharp low-to-high shot from the right alley. Young followed that with a man-up goal on a nice hustle play. Freshman Joe Cummings' shot was saved by Davis, but the rebound bounced in front of the Hoya goal. During the scrum, Young was able to find the ball amidst the chaos and scoop it into the Hoya net.

But with time running out, the Terps decided to force the issue and pulled Jason Carter out of the goal to try to double-team the ball. Georgetown was able to move the ball and avoid a turnover long enough for Ricky Mirabito to get an open-net goal to give the Hoyas a 13-9 lead with 3:29 left.

Catalino scored his second of the game with 13 seconds remaining to close out the scoring.

Junior Bryn Holmes was outstanding for the Terps at the face-off X, winning 12-of-16 draws. He also finished the game with five groundballs and a pair of caused turnovers. Reynolds had a game-high eight groundballs, while Brian Farrell and Brett Schmidt each had three.

Maryland returns to actions next Saturday, Feb. 28, in the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. The Terps will take on ACC rival Duke in the second game of the double-header that features Johns Hopkins taking on Princeton in the opener. The Terrapins and the Blue Devils are slated for a 2:30 p.m. start in a game that will also be televised nationally on ESPNU.
