College Park, Md. -

Despite an amazing effort from junior goalie Pat McGinnis (Ellicott City, Md.), who made 27 saves, the most by any goalie in Division I this season, No. 6 Maryland fell to No. 2 Virginia 11-6 before 5,049 at Byrd Stadium and a live television audience on WMAR-TV. The Terps fall to 6-2 overall and finish the ACC season with a 1-2 record. The Cavaliers move to 5-1, 1-0 in the ACC and have won five games in a row, dating back to a season-opening loss to current No. 1 Syracuse.

Virginia, which outshot Maryland 50-17, was led by the offensive duo of Conor Gill (three goals and one assist) and Drew McKnight (three goals and two assists). David Bruce also added two goals for the Virginia attack. After Maryland took a 2-1 lead on goals by Chris Malone (Timonium, Md.) and Andrew "Buggs" Combs (Baltimore, Md.) 5:40 into the first quarter, Virginia went on to score nine straight goals taking a 10-2 lead early in the fourth quarter. Maryland was held to just two shots over the second and third quarters, including a shotless third period.

Maryland made a valiant comeback in the fourth quarter outscoring the Cavaliers 4-2 in the period as sophomore Matt Urlock (Lutherville, Md.) equaled his career high with a pair of goals in the fourth. Jon Kemezis (Crofton, Md.) and Craig Hochstadt (Columbia, Md.) added Maryland's other tallies.

McGinnis, who is in his first season as Maryland's starter in the cage, made 19 saves in the second half allowing just four goals to a Virginia attack which was averaging 15.80 goals per game. The 27 saves was a career-high.

Maryland returns to action on Saturday, April 8 as the Terps host local rival Navy at 1 p.m. in Byrd Stadium
