April 9, 2013

PONTE VERDA, Fla. – Freshman Heidi Baek shot a five-over 221 (72-75-74) and helped guide Maryland to a 10th place finish at the Marsh Landing Invitational. The native of Suffolk, England recorded her best three-round score of the spring, and tied for 21st place in the field of over 100 competitors.

“I’m certainly happy for Heidi [Baek],” said Director of Intercollegiate Golf Jason Rodenhaver. “Heidi continues to play well and has been pretty consistent for us.”

Senior Christine Shimel had her best round of the tournament today, shooting a team-low 71 and jumping 18 spots to finish 26th. Shimel finished the Invitational with a six-over 222 (76-75-71), her best finish since the Sir Pizza Terrapin Challenge in February. Sophomore Juliet Vongphoumy also recorded her best three-round score of the spring, shooting a seven-over 223 (73-72-78) while tying for 31st.

14th ranked (Golf World/WGCA) Purdue took home the team title, finishing well ahead of the pack with a seven-under 857 (290-284-283). Purdue had three golfers inside the top ten and the next best team finish came from Iowa State with a one-over 865 (289-290-286). Paula Reto of Purdue captured the tournament’s individual medal after defeating Gabriella Dominguez of Texas Tech in a playoff. Both golfers were tied after finishing with a 4-under 212, and Reto made a late push Tuesday by recording a third round score of 70.

Maryland finished with a team score of 900 (298-303-299) and remained in 10th after finishing the first two rounds in the same position. Junior Emily Gimpel finished T80 with a 235 (77-82-76) and freshman Jessica Gregory finished T92 with a 239 (79-81-79).

Maryland’s focus will now shift to the ACC Championships, held April 19-21 in Greensboro, N.C. Coach Rodenhaver knows the team still has their work cut out for them, and hopes to see further improvement in preparation  the ACC Tournament.

“Well we have a week and a half off, so we’ll get some practice in,” said Rodenhaver. “Hopefully the weather has turned, it has been awful this spring for us. But, we’re going to get some practice in and probably redraw line-ups for the ACCs. We have qualifiers this weekend so we’ll find out who we’re going to take, but we need to play better, it’s as simple as that.”
