SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. - Christine Shimel carded a three-under 69 in the final round of the Cardinal Cup in Simpsonville, Ky., to help Maryland place fifth overall.
Shimel, a senior, finished the tournament with a three-over 219 (74-76-69), improving from t-18th to t-4th thanks to the final round 69. Maryland finished fifth as a team with a 907, behind Louisville (896), Missouri (897), Chattanooga (901) and Cincinnati (905).
Juliet Vongphoumy just missed out on a top-10 by shooting a seven-over 223 to finish in a tie for 11th. The sophomore recovered after an opening-round 80 to shoot a two-under 70 in the second round and a closing round 73.
Following Vongphoumy, Emily Gimpel shot 228 (75-79-74) to finish in a tie for 27th, and Heidi Baek shot a 238 (77-79-82) to finish in a tie for 55th. Kendall Dusenberry rounded out the Terrapins' top-five with a 241 (80-80-81).
The host Cardinals captured the team title with a 32-over 896 (294-297-305), a stroke ahead of Missouri (897). Louisville's Emily Haas captured the individual championship by a margin of five strokes by shooting a seven-under par 209 (69-69-71).
