We are excited to kick off 2014 with some very exciting news!
This week, we welcomed two new coaches to our football program: wide receivers coach Keenan McCardell and defensive line coach Chad Wilt. They are very accomplished coaches who will be outstanding additions to Coach Edsall’s staff.
I want to also congratulate Lee Hull and Greg Gattuso, who each accepted head coach positions at Morgan State and Albany, respectively. We wish them the very best and appreciate their contribution to our program.
A special congratulations to senior forward and Mr. Everything Patrick Mullins who captured his second MAC Hermann Trophy (Heisman Trophy of Soccer) last weekend in St. Louis. We could not be more proud of Patrick. He is only the fourth male to ever win the prestigious award twice and above all things, is an incredible person off the field as well. Patrick helped organize the participation of the men’s soccer team at the 2013 Relay for Life event, is the ultimate teammate and – after forgoing the MLS SuperDraft last year after a remarkable junior season – earned his bachelor’s degree in American studies and communications in December.
We are proud and excited for Patrick and fellow forward Schillo Tshuma who were drafted in the first round on the MLS SuperDraft. Patrick was selected 11th overall by the New England Revolution and Schillo was tabbed by the Portland Timbers, 17th overall.
Speaking of the Terps and the draft, I want to congratulate Maryland standouts Michael Ehrhardt, Mike Chanenchuk, Niko Amato and Brian Cooper, who were selected in the 2014 Major League Lacrosse collegiate draft last Friday. Lacrosse season will be here before we know it!
All of our winter sports are officially underway. The gymnastics team is ranked No. 24 in GymInfo's 2014 preseason poll, which is the first top 25 preseason ranking since 2003 when the team debuted at No. 25. Jimmy Sheptock rose to No. 1 at 184 pounds in most national college wrestling polls after winning a highly-coveted Midlands title against Iowa’s Ethen Lofthouse. Thea LaFond won ACC and national honors after winning the women’s high jump and triple jump as the track & field team had a strong season-opening showing at the Penn State Relays last Saturday. The Terps are hosting the Maryland Invitational on Saturday.
Our sixth-ranked women’s basketball team continues to show its depth as it powers through a challenging ACC schedule. Special congratulations also to Alyssa Thomas who was named to the 33-player 2014-16 USA Basketball Women's National Team pool Monday. Rosters for the 2014 USA World Championship Team and, if the U.S. qualifies, the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team will be selected from this pool.
Men’s basketball had an impressive 74-66 win against Notre Dame on Wednesday. The Terps outscored the Irish 49-32 in the second half en route to their third ACC win this year.
Thank you for your continued support and we wish you and yours health and happiness in the New Year!
