While several Maryland baseball players enjoyed strong summer campaigns, sophomore LaMonte Wade arguably may have been the standout of the group after earning Perfect Game USA All-American honors for his play with the Baltimore Redbirds in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League.

Wade helped lead the Redbirds to their second consecutive league title this past summer, while becoming one of the top offensive prospects along the way.

The sophomore batted .289 with 25 runs scored, 25 RBI and five home runs batting leadoff and cleanup. His 25 RBI tied for fifth in the league and his five homers ranked second. In addition, he finished with a .453 slugging percentage, sixth-best in the CRCBL, and a .403 on-base percentage, 12th-best in the league. On the mound, Wade finished with a 1-1 record and 3.00 ERA.

His performance earned him a spot on the CRCBL All-Star roster, along with teammates Zach Morris, Bobby Ruse and Tayler Stiles, and drew the attention of Perfect Game USA. The website named Wade to its Summer Collegiate All-America Team as a utility player and recently named him to its CRCBL top prospect list.

The native of Owings Mills, Md., arrived in College Park last fall and immediately became a fixture in Maryland’s lineup. Primarily playing first base last season, Wade led the team in RBI (38), finished second in doubles (14), and ranked third in runs scored (36). He finished the season with a .260 batting average and a .387 OBP, fourth-best on the squad.

Wade and the Terps are set to begin their fall season next week to begin preparations for the 2014 season.

Notes: Perfect Game USA posted its top prospect list for the 2013 CRCBL season on Monday with Zach Morris and Tayler Stiles joining Wade.
