Brendan Byrne is in his first season as a volunteer assistant after a successful career on the mat for the Terps.

Byrne compiled a 60-36 record in his career with Maryland. After becoming the winningest wrestler in the history of Cape May High School with a record of 98-25, Byrne won 19 matches for the Terps as a freshman in 2005-06. He was forced to redshirt as a sophomore (2006-07) due to injury. Byrne was a team captain last year and a key component in helping Maryland capture their second straight ACC Championship and a 10th place finish at the NCAA Championships.

Byrne's Career at Maryland:

As a redshirt junior: Won the ACC Championship at 125 pounds...national qualifier, going 1-2 at the NCAA Championships...won 22 matches...4-1 in ACC Dual meet competition...earned University of Maryland Athlete of the Week honors January 27, 2009...Team Captain...Curt Callahan Mental toughness award winner.

As a redshirt sophomore: Finished third at ACC tournament in the 125-pound division...went 4-1 in ACC Dual meet competition...won 19 matches during the season...earned University of Maryland Athlete of the Week Honors January 29, 2008...Curt Callahan Mental Toughness award winner.

As a sophomore: Redshirt year

As a freshman: Finished runner-up at the ACC Championship in the 133-pound division...finished with 19 wins on the season...went 4-1 in ACC Dual meet competition, including a win over eventual ACC champion Jarred Royer of UNC... earned University of Maryland Athlete of the week honors once...Curt Callahan Mental toughness award winner.
