Feb. 18, 2006

FAIRFAX, Va. - The Maryland wrestling team closed out the regular season with a win over George Mason, 26-15. The win was Maryland's eighth of the regular season, its highest total since 2002.

The Terps finish the regular season with a record of 8-10 (4-1 ACC).

James Knox got the Terps started with a win after handing Joe Coughlin 3-1 decision at 125 pounds. GMU evened the dual at the next weight, as Will Powars edged Brendan Byrne, 6-4.

The Terps then took command of the dual with 16 straight points, beginning with Alex Krom's 14-4 major decision over Chris Cartella. Maryland then benefitted from back-to-back weight classes at 149 and 157 to take a 18-3 lead.

The Patriots rallied, though, scoring wins at 165 pounds and 174 pounds to cut the Terrapin lead in half. Maryland managed to put the dual away, though, with victories at 184 and 197. Luke Stauffer blanked Ken Jackson, 8-0, for a major decision. Jerry Afari then handled Joel Caruso, 10-7, in the last contested bout of the night. GMU heavyweight Ryan Kittrick was awarded a forfeit to close out the dual.

The Terps will now prepare for the ACC Tournament on March 4, at Virginia Military Institute, in Lexington, Va.
