COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Four Maryland wrestlers have been ranked in the preseason top 20 in their weight classes by Wrestling International Newsmagazine (WIN), Amateur Wrestling News (AWN), and WrestlingReport.com. Redshirt sophomore Hudson Taylor and sophomore Mike Letts are ranked in the top 10 in their respective classes while senior Charlie Pinto is No. 19 by WrestlingReport.com and junior Alex Krom is ranked No. 18 by WIN.
Taylor is ranked No. 8 in the nation at 197 pounds by WIN and No. 10 by AWN. He finished last season with a 29-9 record, tying for the team's best dual record at 18-3. He led the team with 15 falls and added two technical falls and two major decisions. Taylor was ranked as high as No. 14 in the country while going undefeated in the ACC. He finished one point shy of All-America status at NCAAs as he lost in the round of 12, 4-3. Taylor earned his bid to the NCAA Tournament after gaining All-ACC accolades at the conference tournament and earning one of the ACC's four wildcard bids.
Letts, who is ranked No. 7 by WIN and No. 8 by AWN at 174 pounds, tied for the team lead in wins in 2006-07, posting a 30-7 record. He led the team with 10 major decisions and also recorded four technical falls and a pin. Letts was the first Maryland true freshman to advance to the NCAA Tournament since 1990 where he went 2-2. Letts was undefeated in ACC action and won the ACC Championship at 174 pounds while being ranked as high as No. 10 in the nation in his weight class during the season.
Both Taylor and Letts are ranked No. 9 in the nation by WrestlingReport.com.
Pinto is ranked No. 19 by WrestlingReport.com in the preseason at 141 pounds. Last season, he posted a 16-4 record and went 9-2 in duals. Pinto earned five major decisions, three falls, and one technical fall. He sat out the 2005-06 season with an injury after winning the 2005 ACC Championship at 141 pounds.
Krom, who will take a redshirt year at 141 pounds, posted a 22-7 record last season, including a 2-1 record in the ACC and a 7-3 mark in duals. He was ranked as high as No. 13 in the nation while recording six falls and six major decisions. Krom won 10 of his last 12 matches in the regular season and finished third at the ACC Tournament.
The Terps get their 2007-08 under way on Thursday, October 25 with the Red & Black Wrestle-offs. The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Comcast Pavilion.
