#17 Terps Fall at #16 Pitt

Dec. 7, 2012

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The 17th-ranked Maryland wrestling team earned two wins in three marquee matchups, but 16th-ranked Pittsburgh prevailed, 23-12, Friday night at Fitzgerald Field House.

Both Geoffrey Alexander, ranked 14th nationally at 133, and Jimmy Sheptock, ranked 10th nationally at 184, won decisions over their nationally-ranked opponents to lead the Terps (4-2). Alexander defeated sixth-ranked Shelton Mack, while Sheptock knocked off No. 15 Max Thomusseit.

The Terps got out of the gate quickly thanks to a pair of decisions from Shane Gentry (125) and Alexander. After a scoreless first period, Gentry earned an early escape and tacked on a takedown midway through the second period. Gentry added another takedown in the third and held off a late rally by the Panther's Godwin Nyama to earn the win.

Against Mack, Alexander racked up a 1:16 in riding time to start the second period after a scoreless first period. Mack countered with a reversal late in the period and the Panther's standout held a 2-1 heading to the third. Alexander quickly escaped to begin the period and held off Mack to win a decision on riding time. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native improved his record to 3-1 against nationally-ranked opponents this season.

Maryland headed to 149 with a 6-3 lead after Danny O'Malley lost a 7-0 decision at 141. Mascola scored an early first-period takedown and held a 2-1 advantage heading to the third period. After Pitt's Donnie Tasser was awarded a point for stalling, Mascola countered with a reversal and tacked on riding time for a 5-2 win.

At 184, Sheptock used a late third-period takedown to earn a 3-2 decision over 15th-ranked Max Thomusseit. Thomusseit tied the match 1-1 after an escape to begin the third. Holding a riding time advantage, Thomusseit furiously fought off several Sheptock strikes. Finally, Sheptock got Thomusseit's leg and took him to the mat for the win.

Following Mascola's victory, the Panthers won five of the final six matches to seize the win including bonus-point victories at 165 and 174.

The Terps are back in action on Sunday at American. The Terps and Eagles are scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
