No. 22 Wrestling Travels To George Mason Thursday Night

Feb. 20, 2008

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 22 Maryland wrestling team heads to Fairfax, Va., on Thursday, February 21 to face George Mason in non-conference action. The Terrapins (14-4) have won 10 of their last 11 outings and have won more duals the past two seasons than in any other two season stretch in school history. George Mason (13-4) has tied its program record for wins in a season set back in 1991-92. Action starts at 6:00 p.m. at the Fieldhouse.

Maryland's 31 combined wins the last two seasons sets a school record for wins in consecutive seasons. The previous best was 29 victories in the 1988-89 and 1989-90 seasons.

The Terps have had the same three wrestlers ranked in the top 20 since December 2. Sophomore Mike Letts has not left the top 10 all year at 174 pounds. He has reached as high as No. 7 and is currently ninth nationally in his weight class with a record of 18-4.

Sophomore Hudson Taylor has not left the top 11 all season at 197 pounds and is currently ranked No. 5 in the country with a 26-2 mark. The Pennington, N.J., product has not lost since November 17 and his 16 falls is the fifth highest total in the nation.

Junior Josh Haines entered the rankings at No. 20 on December 2 and has not left since that time. He has reached as high as No. 17 and is currently No. 19 in the nation. Haines is 14-7 at 184 pounds.

George Mason is having a record-setting season at 13-4 and has won its last four duals. The Patriots have faced two ranked teams this season and are 0-2 in those duals. GMU lost to Hofstra, 28-9, on January 19 and to Old Dominion, 32-12, on February 3. Both matches were at home in Fairfax.

The most anticipated match of the night should be Taylor versus Cayle Byers, who is ranked No. 12 at 197 pounds. The freshman is 16-1 in dual matches this year and is 33-5 overall. Taylor is 17-1 in duals so far this year.

Another exciting match could be seen at the 174 pound weight class as Letts will match up with Randy Oates who is 23-8 and 14-2 in dual action.

The Terps finish up their dual season at Virginia on Sunday, February 24 at 1:00 p.m.
