Stork Wins 21st Consecutive Match, But Terps Fall To UNC

Feb. 1, 2003

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- University of Maryland's wrestling team jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead over North Carolina Saturday at Carmichael Auditorium here, but the Tar Heels overcame the early defict to hand the Terps a 30-9 setback.

In the Terps' second ACC match of the season, seniors Jake Stork and Sal Aquia scored decisions to give the Terps an early lead.

In a battle of unbeatens, Maryland's Jake Stork ended Dusty Heist's seven-match dual meet win streak with a 4-3 win. In winning his 21st consecutive match of the season, Stork used a late takedown to secure the win. With 25 seconds left in the third period, Stork was able to score a two-point takedown to take his first lead of the match. Heist was unable to escape, and as time ran out, Stork came out with his closest win of the season.

Sal Aquia was able to continue the good fortune for the Terps as he beat David Dashiell 3-1 in the 197-pound weight class, but the Terps were only able to earn one more win the rest of the day.

The Tar Heels reeled off five consecutive wins that left the Terps behind 21-6. North Carolina's Ryan Adams began the streak with a decision over Eric Fehnel, 10-3 in the heavyweight division, and defending ACC champion Chris Rodrigues continued it with a pin over Matt Pandullo. Evan Sola then scored a technical fall over Mike Lupa, 15-0; Brian Baglio defeated John-Henry Zarzycki 10-0 for a major decision, and Chris DiGuiseppe narrowly beat Adam James 2-1.

In the 157-pound weight class, Jason Kiessling earned the Terps' third win of the day with a 7-4 decision over Garret Atkinson to put the score 21-9.

In the last two bouts of the day, Sean Collins lost due to an injury default against Jimmy O'Connor, and North Carolina's Mark Canty beat Patrick Cissne 9-3.

The Tar Heels improved to 6-3, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Terrapins fell to 4-5, 0-2 ACC.

Maryland will be in action next Saturday, Feb. 8, at Duke. The match is slated to start at 1 p.m. in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
