Nine Wrestlers Still Alive On First Day Of Southern Scuffle

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Nine Maryland Terrapin wrestlers are still alive at the Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, N.C., including freshman Hudson Taylor who advanced to the championship quarterfinals at 197 pounds. The tournament, which features six nationally ranked teams and 58 ranked individuals, will conclude tomorrow.

Other wrestlers still vying to place at the tournament are Brendan Byrne (133), Alex Krom (141), Jason Gribschaw (141), Andrew Schlaffer (149), Adam James (157), Dominic Buckman (174), Jerry Afari (197) and Bryan Reiss (285).

Taylor won three matches on the day, including a 9-1 major decision over Minnesota's Mitch Kuhlman to advance to the quarterfinals. Krom, Buckman, Afari and Reiss also advanced to the round of 16 in the championship bracket before facing defeat.

In addition to Taylor, three other Terps posted three wins on the day: Byrne, Gribschaw and Schlaffer. Those wrestlers are still alive in the wrestle-backs.
