COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland wrestling team is competing in the 46th Annual Midlands Championships Monday and Tuesday at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
The Midlands Championships is one of the most prestigious wrestling events in the country, drawing in 350 of the best wrestlers in the country on a yearly basis.
"I am excited to get back to competition. The guys should be fresh and ready for a hard push to reach their individual and team goals in 2009," Maryland head coach Kerry McCoy said. "The Midlands is a great event and I am excited to have our guys there. We will have another chance to see top-notch completion at the level we will see at the NCAA Championships."
The Terps will officially send nine wrestlers to the mat, headlined by No. 7 Hudson Taylor (197 pounds) and No. 9 Steven Bell (133 pounds). Taylor and Bell are both pre-seeded at No. 4 in their respective weight divisions.
The other Terps competing include: Brendan Byrne and Lou Ruland (125 pounds), No. 17 Alex Krom (141 pounds), Kyle John (157 pounds), Brian Letters (165 pounds), Corey Peltier (174 pounds) and Patrick Gilmore (285 pounds).
Tuesday's championship round will be televised on the Big Ten Network, with the semifinals airing via tape delay.
Several Maryland wrestlers are wrestling Sunday in the Wilkes Open in Walkes-Barre, Pa.
