COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Led by two pins from 133-pound Geoffrey Alexander and a three win performance from 184-pound Jimmy Sheptock, the Maryland wrestling team defeated Brown, Harvard and Stanford Saturday afternoon at Comcast Pavilion.

Alexander, ranked 14th nationally, went undefeated in his three matches with two falls and a decision. Seventh-ranked Sheptock also went 3-0 and had one pin, one major decision and a decision. For his effort, Alexander shared the Hudson Taylor Award, which is given to Maryland’s top performer at home duals, with Shane Arechiga, who earned an 11-3 major decision at 149 against Stanford’s Colton Dempsey.

The Terps (9-4) also received strong performances from fifth-ranked Josh Asper at 174, 19th-ranked Christian Boley, Dallas Brown, Frank Goodwin and Lou Mascola. All five wrestlers picked up two victories on Saturday. For Asper, Saturday’s duals marked his first action since the Northeast Duals in November.

“Overall, today was pretty good,” said head coach Kerry McCoy. “I told our guys to never underestimate anybody, expect it to be a battle. They may have taken the competition a little bit lightly. We found ourselves in a couple of battles. Ultimately, they stepped up and got it done. Getting three wins in our home gym is really good. It builds momentum for later on.”

Maryland opened Saturday’s action against Harvard and overcame a 14-9 deficit after the first six matches to earn a 22-14 victory over the Crimson. The Terps won the final four matches of the dual to get the victory.

After the Crimson took the lead with a decision at 125, Alexander tallied his first pin of the afternoon getting Harvard’s Ryan Osleeb to the mat 35 seconds into the match and putting the Terps up 6-3. The Crimson won three of the next four matches before Asper regained the momentum for Maryland.

The Parkton, Md., native scored two takedowns in the first period. Asper accumulated a significant riding time advantage in the match and won 7-3.

Sheptock stepped onto the mat following Asper and recorded five takedowns en route to a 13-3 major decision over Josh Popple. After trailing 2-0 entering the second period, Boley tallied one second-period takedown, three third-period takedowns and one 3-point near fall to win 10-5 at 197.

Brown closed out the dual with a 3-1 sudden victory decision at heavyweight over Nick Gajdzik. It is Brown’s second overtime win of the season.

Bonus points keyed the Terps win over Stanford in the second dual. Maryland received three major decisions and two falls in the 27-12 victory over the Cardinal.

Goodwin got it rolling at 141 with a pin of Josh Lauderdale with 25 seconds remaining in the first period. The native of Pasadena, Md., took Lauderdale to the mat for two points and worked the cradle for a 3-point near fall before pinning him. Arechiga followed with a major over Colton Dempsey at 149 to put the Terps up 13-3.

After Stanford earned wins at 157 and 165 to cut into Maryland’s lead, Asper majored Thomas Kimbrell and Sheptock pinned Alan Yen 1:36 into the second period to extend the Terrapin advantage to 23-9.

Boley picked up the Terps last win of the dual with a 14-6 major decision over Michael Sojka.

In Saturday’s last dual, the Terps won eight of 10 matches to defeat Brown 27-6. The Terps won the first four matches including Alexander’s second fall before the Bears got on the board at 157.

Domenic DeRobertis earned his first career dual win at 165 with a 6-1 decision over CJ Howard. After two scoreless periods, DeRobertis scored two 3-point near falls in the third period to get the win.

The Bears earned three points with a win at 174. Maryland closed the dual with three consecutive victories from Sheptock, Ty Snook and Brown.
