COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The 17th-ranked University of Maryland wrestling team begins the 2008-09 season Saturday at the Fighting Scot Duals in Edinboro, Pa., as the Terrapins try to repeat last year's success, which culminated with a 16-4 overall record and Atlantic Coast Conference championship.
The Terps face Army at noon, Findlay at 2 p.m. and finish with No. 15 Edinboro, the host school, at 4 p.m.
Maryland faced both Army and Edinboro last season at the Fighting Scot Duals, defeating the Black Knights, 26-13, and dropping a close, 19-15 decision to the Fighting Scots.
After finishing 21st at the NCAA Championships last year, the Terps begin this season ranked 17th in the country. The Terps return nine of 10 starters from last year's conference champions.
Five Maryland wrestlers begin the season ranked in the top 25 in their respective weight classes, including No. 12 Steven Bell (133), No. 14 Eric Medina (149), No. 16 Brian Letters (157), No. 11 Mike Letts (174) and No. 2 Hudson Taylor (197), the school's first All-American in more than a decade.
Army presents two interesting matchups for Maryland, as No. 6 Matt Kyler should face Medina at 149 pounds. At 197 pounds, No. 16 Richard Starks opposes Taylor.
The Fighting Scots boast six ranked wrestlers. Bell has a tough matchup at 133 pounds against No. 19 Rick Deubel. Other ranked wrestlers for Edinboro include: No. 4 Gregor Gillespie (157), No. 8 Jarrod King (165), No. 17 Phil Morricone (174), No. 16 Chris Honeycutt (184) and No. 10 Joe Fendone (HWT).
Bell defeated Deubel, 5-2, last year. Gillespie, King and Fendone all won their matchups against the Terps last season, while Letts defeated Morricone at 174 pounds, 5-3.
