No. 22 Wrestling In Fifth After Day One Of Southern Scuffle

    GREENSBORO, N.C. - The No. 22 Maryland wrestling team is in fifth place after the first day of action at the 2007 UNCG Southern Scuffle on December 28 at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center. Four wrestlers went undefeated on the day to advance to the quarterfinals, including redshirt junior Josh Haines and sophomores Brendan Byrne, Mike Letts, and Hudson Taylor.

    The Terps are tied for fifth with No. 17 Cornell with 37.5 points. No. 1 Minnesota is in first place with 53.5 points while No. 14 Edinboro (42.5), Boise State (39.5), and No. 24 Old Dominion (38.5) round out the top five.

    Byrne went 2-0 in the 125 pound field beginning with a 16-0 shutout in his opening round match for the technical fall. He then beat fourth-seeded Nick Bedelyon, 15-10, to advance to the quarterfinals. Freshman Pat Strizki is also alive after the first day of competition, going 2-1 with a pair of decisions.

    Redshirt sophomore Steven Bell went 2-1 today at 133 pounds as did sophomore Jon Kohler at 141 pounds, finishing his day with a pin in the first period. Junior Alex Krom went 1-1 and will also compete in the wrestlebacks on Sunday.

    Freshman Eric Medina won his first match of the day before losing his second match at 149. In the wrestlebacks, he went 2-0 with both wins coming by way of fall. Junior Steve Fehnel will also continue to compete tomorrow, going 2-1 with both wins coming by decision.

    Letts easily got by his two opponents to advance to the quarterfinals at 174 pounds. His first win came on a 14-6 major decision and then he pinned his second opponent 40 seconds into the second period for the win. Redshirt freshman Bradley Nielson is also competing in the 174 division and went 1-1.

    Haines and Taylor both advanced to the quarterfinals in the 184 and 197 pound brackets, respectively. Haines dominated his opposition in two matches by a combined 13-1 while Taylor picked up one of his three wins with a 13-0 shutout.

    Redshirt freshman Patrick Gilmore went 1-1 and opened the tournament with a pin in the first period. He lost his second match, however, and will compete in the wrestlebacks on Sunday.
