COLUMBUS, Ohio - University of Maryland wrestler Hudson Taylor dropped a 13-1 major decision to Iowa State's Jake Varner Monday evening at the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic at Ohio State University.

Taylor, the second-ranked wrestler in the nation at 197 pounds, was taken down by No. 1 Varner to fall behind 2-0 in the first period. Taylor converted an escape to get within one point at 2-1, but couldn't score again. Varner added another takedown at the end of the first period to go up 4-1.

Varner added a reversal and three-point near fall for a 9-1 lead in the second period. A third-period escape and takedown made the score 12-1 in Varner's favor with the final point added for riding time.

The match was an exhibition and will not count against Taylor's record or affect his national ranking.

Taylor was the first Maryland wrestler to participate in the event since Gobel Kline in 1969.
