Maryland Wrestlers Performing Well in Regional, National Competitions

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Although the Maryland wrestling season officially concluded at last month's NCAA Championships in St. Louis, several Terrapin grapplers have performed strongly in regional and national competitions in recent weeks.

Twelve Terps competed at the Northeast Senior Regional Freestyle Championships April 3-5 in Brockport, N.Y. Freshman transfer Chris Stinnett (74 kg, 163 pounds) won four matches to finish second. Freshman Josh Asper (74 kg) won six matches to finish third. Mike Letts lost his opening match, but battled back with seven straight wins to finish third at 84 kg (185 pounds). Kyle Manley won three matches to also place, finishing fourth at 96 kg (211.5 pounds).

Owen Duffy, Matt Bogusz, Shawn Mazzarone, Jon Kohler, Patrick Klenkel, James Knox, Bradley Nielson, Tommy Sitar and volunteer assistant coach James Yonushonis also competed in the event, which is a qualifying tournament for the US Senior World Team Trials.

Four Terps competed in last weekend's US National Freestyle Championships in Las Vegas. Asper finished third, Corey Peltier finished fourth and Smith finished eighth in the Fila Junior division while Letts went 3-2 in the Senior (Olympic) Qualifying Division.

Locally, Casey Marwine and Kyle John went undefeated at last weekend's tournament at North Hagerstown High School in an event run by the Maryland State Wrestling Association.
