GRANTHAM, Pa. - Josh Asper, Pat Strizki and Chris Lloyd all won their weight divisions Saturday at the Messiah Open at Messiah College and six more University of Maryland wrestlers placed in the event.
Asper was never challenged at 165 pounds, as the freshman won all four matches en route to his second consecutive open championship. Asper recorded a technical fall and three major decisions in his four matches, including a 12-2 major decision in the title bout against Liberty's Joseph Bayer.
Lloyd, who wrestled unattached, only needed three victories to claim the championship at 184 pounds. Lloyd claimed major decisions against DJ Brown and Andrew Regan before winning a 6-0 decision against Delaware Valley's Zack Stavish in the championship match.
Strizki also wrestled unattached at 125 pounds and won all four of his matches, despite only wrestling in three matches all season coming into the day. After a fall, major decision and decision, Strizki edged teammate Will Sharbaugh, 3-2, to take the championship.
