Two Terps Place Second At East Stroudsburg Open

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland wrestling team competed in its first tournament Saturday, placing two wrestlers in second place at the East Stroudsburg Open.

Picking up where he left off, redshirt-senior Jake Stork notched four falls, the fastest coming against Josh Leibowitz in 1:12 in the second round, en route to a second place finish in the 184-pound weight class. Stork's other victims were UNC's Warren Lachier (F5:13) in round one, Nick Catone in round 3 (F1:57), and Columbia's Kirk Davis who fell in 1:24. Stork was defeated 6-5 by Mark Becks in the 184-pound championship.

The Terps' other top wrestler, Sal Aquia, wrestled his way to a second place finish in the 197-pound weight class. Aquia defeated Columbia's Ben Tecmine in his first match Saturday. He then proceeded to dispose of Chris Weidman, Corey Winston and Stanley Foster to put himself through to the championship match. Aquia recorded his only fall of the tournament against Winston in 5:30. Aquia lost to Clarion's Eric Mausser 3-1 in a hard-fought championship match.

The 141-pound and the 149-pound weight classes both included strong finishes Saturday. In the 141-pound weight class, both John-Henry Zarzycki and Stephen Lanciotti wrestled well. Zarzycki defeated Chris Smith in his first collegiate match, and won three matches in wrestle backs to total four wins for the tournament. Lanciotti continued the trend and won four matches as well. In his first match wrestling for Maryland, Lanciotti recorded a fall against Columbia's Andrew Lebed in 1:06. He also won three matches in wrestle backs.

Jason Kiessling had a strong showing in his first tournament at the collegiate level. He won five matches including a fall in 3:50 over Ryan Moonham in the 149-pound weight class. Adam James also wrestled well, notching his first four wins of the season. Luke Stauffer was defeated by Mike Anderson in his first match for Maryland.

In the 125-pound weight class, Matt Pandullo won his first match of the season over Jamie Thomas by a score of 8-2, and in wrestle backs, he felled Louis Russo in 6:42. Also competing in this weight class was Zachary Wendal who lost 6-5 to Mike Henderson.

The Terps had four wrestlers show in the 133-pound weight class. Sophomore Mike Lupa defeated West Point's Michael Tatz in his first action on the season. He faced teammate Jason Gribschaw in wrestle backs and defeated him 2-1. Gribschaw lost in the first round to John Moore. Both Ed Reybitz and Bryan Rizzo wrestled, but failed to record a victory.

In action in the 157-pound weight class, both Adam Beytin and Matt Kenny notched their first victories of the season. Jason Ellis also competed, but lost to UNC's Garret Atkinson.

Sean Fehn defeated Brockport's Adam Erell 4-3 while wrestling at 165 pounds, and Gregory Lawrence was defeated by George Mason's PJ Ross in the 174-pound weight class.

In heavyweight action, Eric Fehnel defeated Frank Dipiano of Middlesex by a score of 5-3 on his way to tallying four victories. One win came in wrestle backs where he faced teammate Scott Cannon who he defeated in 3:40. Before falling to Fehnel, Cannon defeated Lehigh's John Hyde in 0:59.

The Terps will be in action next weekend at the Penn State Open in State College, Pa.
