CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Virginia Cavaliers raced out to a 12-0 lead and then held on to defeat the Maryland Terrapins, 24-14, Friday night in ACC wrestling action. Despite the loss, the Terps share the ACC regular season title with the 'Hoos.
The dual started at heavyweight, where UVa promptly earned a 6-0 lead with a forfeit. The 'Hoos then won at 125 and 133, but the Terps rallied in the next two weight classes with a pair of major decisions. Alex Krom handled Nick Alparone, 10-1, at 141 pounds, and was followed by Andrew Schlaffer's 11-3 victory over Drew DiPasquale to make the dual 12-8.
Maryland then surged ahead in the dual with two more victories as Adam James and Adam DeCosmo each won by decision. James narrowly missed a major decision as he defeated Mike Sewell 12-5. DeCosmo then defeated Damian Johnson 9-4 to give teh Terps a 14-12 lead with three bouts left.
At 174, UVa's Mike Grogan defeated Mike Maceroli 4-2 to give the 'Hoos a 15-14 lead they would not relinquish. Kyle Narkiewicz stretched the Virginia lead to 18-14 after his 5-2 decision over Luke Stauffer. The Cavaliers then sealed the victory as Brent Jones pinned Jerry Afari in :37 seconds.
The shared ACC title marks the first time since 1973 that the Terps have finished the regular season atop the ACC standings. Maryland (7-10, 4-1 ACC) will be back in action on Saturday against George Mason at 6 p.m.
