Feb. 3, 2008

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The No. 21 Maryland wrestling team bounced back from its setback on Saturday with a 22-12 win against Columbia on February 3 at University Gym. Six wrestlers were victorious for the Terrapins on the day with sophomores Hudson Taylor and Mike Letts leading the way.

Taylor earned his team-leading 15th pin of the season in the second period against Nick Sommerfeld. Going into the weekend, he was tied for the ACC lead and tied for sixth in the nation with his 14 falls. Letts, who wrestled at 184 pounds for the first time this season, won by decision against Kenji Porter, 5-2.

Sophomores Mookie Golden and Jon Kohler kicked things off for the Terps with a pair of wins to give Maryland a 7-0 lead. Golden opened the day with a 4-1 decision against Jerome Greco in his first dual competition of the season. Kohler tacked on four more points with a 12-2 major decision against Nick Standish.

The Lions cut the lead to one for the first time, the closest they would get, with a pair of decisions at 149 and 157 pounds. Sophomore Mike McGill pushed the lead back to four with a 4-3 decision at 165 pounds but Columbia took the three points back with a decision of its own at 174.

Letts and Taylor sealed the win with their combined nine points in their two wins, giving the Terps a 19-9 lead. Sophomore Brendan Byrne finished the day with a 4-1 decision at 125 pounds.

Maryland (13-4) will take 10 days off and then host its last dual meet of the season on Wednesday, February 13 when American visits Comcast Pavilion.
