Wrestling Opens Season With Red & Black Wrestle-Offs

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland wrestling team opened its 2007-08 campaign with the Red & Black Wrestle-Offs on October 25 at the Comcast Pavilion. The exhibition featured 13 matches as the red team beat the black team, 32-21.

The first match of the night was one of the most anticipated between junior James Knox and redshirt sophomore Brendan Byrne at 125 pounds. Byrne received a point as Knox stalled in the first period and then started down in the second period and managed an escape to make it 2-0. Knox cut the lead in half with an escape in the third but it wasn't enough.

In a battle between 125 pound freshmen, Pat Strizki beat Will Sharbaugh by major decision, 10-2. Strizki used four takedowns en route to the victory. Redshirt sophomore Stephen Bell won at 133 pounds on the strength of four takedowns and a reversal.

Sophomore Jon Kohler knocked off redshirt senior Charlie Pinto, ranked No. 20 at 141 pounds, with an 8-5 decision. Kohler recorded a takedown in each period with a pair of escapes while keeping Pinto to just three escapes and a late reversal.

Freshman Dex Lederer and Matt Bogusz provided a good match at 141 pounds with Lederer taking a 3-2 decision. Going into the third period with a 1-0 deficit, Bogusz started down and escaped immediately. Ledered came up with the winning takedown with 36 seconds left for the victory.

Junior Alex Krom easily won his 141/149 match against freshman Kyle John with a 15-6 major decision. He recorded six takedowns during the match and also added a reversal.

Freshman Eric Medina made an impressive debut in front of the Maryland faithful at 149 pounds as he pinned classmate Matt MacLean in 2:02. In the other 149 pound match, redshirt senior Ryan Brown used a pair of takedowns to beat freshman Cory Biscaha, 4-2.

Freshman Brian Letters also made a solid College Park debut as he beat redshirt senior Clint Stout, 10-2, at 157 pounds. Letters scored four takedowns, an escape, and rode his way to a bonus point in a 10-2 major decision.

Redshirt sophomore Mike McGill, who moved up to 165 pounds from 157 last year, beat senior Ryan Kennett in his match, 10-3.

Sophomore Mike Letts shutout his opposition, 16-0, and earned a technical fall win in 5:48. The 2007 ACC Champion at 174 pounds recorded five takedowns and a pair of near falls to help him to the win.

In the final match of the night at heavyweight, redshirt freshman Patrick Gilmore secured the win for the red team as he pinned freshman Tommy Sitar in 5:48.

The Terps open the 2007-08 season on Saturday, November 3 when they take on Army, Mercyhurst, and No. 16 Edinboro in Edinboro, Pa.
