Terps Take Two on Tobacco Road

Feb. 9, 2013

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Maryland wrestling team closed out its Atlantic Coast Conference schedule with a pair of wins at Duke and at NC State on Saturday. The Terps (12-7, 3-2 ACC) defeated the Blue Devils, 38-3, in their first match of the day and bested the Wolfpack, 22-19, in the second dual.

Jimmy Sheptock, ranked sixth nationally at 184, continued to impress with two wins by technical fall, while at 174, fifth-ranked Josh Asper earned two wins by decision. With the wins, Asper and Sheptock each locked up a No. 1 seed for the ACC Tournament on March 9 at Comcast Center.

At 133, 14th-ranked Geoffrey Alexander won two matches by forfeit to improve to 5-0 in ACC duals and secure a top seed on March 9. At 197, 14th-ranked Christian Boley, secured his No. 1 seed with an 18-6 major decision over Duke’s Michael Chapman.

“The guys wrestled tough and scored a lot of points,” said head coach Kerry McCoy. “To go on the road and face two teams in one day is a challenge, but we were up to the challenge. It’s a nice way to finish the ACC dual season and set the tone for the ACC Tournament.”

In the first dual, the Terps won 9 of 10 matches against the Blue Devils to cruise to a 38-3 win. Maryland put the dual out of reach early by scoring bonus points in two of the first three matches.

After Dallas Brown opened with a 5-2 decision over Duke’s Brian Self, Shane Gentry tallied his first technical fall of the season with a 16-0 win over Peter Terrezza. Gentry scored a takedown in each period along with one 2-point near fall and two 3-point near falls.

The Terps got six team points with the forfeit at 133 followed by a 4-3 decision for Shane Arechiga at 141 to put the Terrapins up 17-0.

At 149, Lou Mascola notched his fourth pin of the season after taking Marcus Cain to the mat 30 seconds into the final period and turning him for the fall.

The Blue Devils got on the board at 157, but Duke’s momentum did not last long as Domenic DeRobertis won a 7-6 decision at 165 over Randy Roden. DeRobertis went on the offensive in the first period and scored a takedown and a 3-point near fall. DeRobertis held off Roden late for the decision.

Maryland scored bonus points in two of the final three matches. Asper won a 4-2 decision followed by an 18-3 technical fall for Sheptock. The junior scored six points in each period with a takedown in the final seconds of the third period to get the extra team point.

Boley capped the dual with an 18-6 major decision over Michael Chapman.

The Wolfpack posed a stiffer challenge later in the day. NC State won the first three matches and led 10-0 heading to 174.

Asper got the Terps on the board with an 8-4 decision over Patrick Davis. Sheptock followed with his second technical fall as he defeated Keegan Cerwinski 15-0.

At 197, Ty Snook put the Terps ahead for good with a 15-0 technical fall over Bill Cook. Maryland got two more wins at 285 and 133 to secure the victory.
