Nov. 12, 2005

EDINBORO, Pa. - The Maryland Terrapin wrestling team opened the 2005-06 season with a 1-2 record at the Avalon Duals in Edinboro, Pa. The Terps defeated Slippery Rock but fell to Old Dominion and host No. 23 Edinboro.

Four wrestlers picked up two wins on the afternoons: Andrew Schlaffer (149), Josh Haines (184), Jerry Afari (197) and Bryan Reiss (285). Four others picked up wins on the afternoon.

In the season opener against Old Dominion, the Terps fell to Old Dominion, 24-14. The Monarchs opened up with wins at the first two weight classes before Charlie Pinto (141) got Maryland on the board with a 14-3 major decision over Shannon Slack. Schlaffer then blanked Josh Tyler, 6-0, to cut ODU's lead to 9-7. The Monarchs, though, distanced themselves with three straight wins. Haines majored Kevin Harrington, 12-3, and Reiss just missed a major decision but still won 9-2 in his debut.

The Terps rebounded in the second dual of the afternoon, handling Slippery Rock, 21-14. James Knox (125) and Sean Carr (133) got Maryland off to a 6-0 start before Pinto defaulted due to injury. Schlaffer again did not allow a point in his dual with Chuck Wiltrout, 5-0, and Mike McGill (157) added a 9-2 win to give Maryland the 12-6 lead. The Rockets rallied with back-to-back major decisions to take a 14-12 lead, but the Terps stormed back in the final three bouts. Haines, Afari and Reiss all won by decision to secure Maryland's first victory of the season.

In the final dual, Edinboro defeated the Terps, 32-3. The Fighting Scots won the first eight bouts. Maryland narrowly missed victories in the three of those bouts as Eli Black (165) and Dominic Buckman (174) lost in overtime, and Haines was edged 5-4 by 11th-ranked Alex Clemsen. Afari picked up the lone Terp win in the dual, winning in overtime over Joe Fendone. Reiss also took a narrow loss in the final bout of the day, losing 3-1 to Koel Davia.

The Terps will be back in action next week at the Body Bar Classic.
