GREENSBORO, N.C. - Maryland junior Mike Letts has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week, the league announced Wednesday morning.
Letts went a perfect 5-0 at the Wolfpack Open last Saturday, winning his second consecutive open tournament championship in as many weeks in the 174-pound division. Letts was also named ACC Wrestler of the Week during the opening week of last season. It was Maryland's second straight ACC Wrestler of the Week honor, as Hudson Taylor claimed it during the final week of last season.
"Mike is doing a great job this season," Maryland head coach Kerry McCoy said. "He has really stepped up his commitment to becoming an NCAA champion. We look forward to more great things from him this year."
Letts opened the Wolfpack Open with a pin of Campbell's Justin Sparrow in only 1:34 and followed it with an 11-5 decision over Ohio State's TC Pendleton. Letts cruised to the title from there, pinning Newberry College's Brock Budesheim in 4:47 to get to the semifinals.
Once in the semis, Letts dominated fellow ACC wrestler Ben Fiacco of North Carolina, claiming a 16-0 technical fall. Letts made it 2-0 against the Buckeyes for the weekend, winning the championship match against No. 19 David Rella of Ohio State via an 11-2 major decision.
