GREENSBORO, N.C. - Redshirt sophomore Hudson Taylor was named the ACC Wrestler of the Week after going 8-0 in his matches from December 8-30. Taylor improved his winning streak to 12 matches and has not lost since November 17. This is the second time that he has earned the award making him the only wrestler in the conference to be honored twice so far this season.
Taylor also earned Wrestler of the Week honors on November 27. Maryland has won the award four times while no other school in the ACC has more than one to its name. Sophomore Mike Letts was honored with the first award on November 6 while redshirt junior Josh Haines earned it on November 20.
Taylor, who moved from being ranked No. 11 to No. 8 at 197 pounds this week, won by forfeit against Rider on December 8 before he pinned Lamar Brown of Rutgers in the third period.
The Pennington, N.J. product then went 6-0 at the Southern Scuffle en route to winning the 197 pound championship. On day one, Taylor cruised to the quarterfinals by outscoring his competition 31-5 in three matches. He pinned North Carolina's Dennis Drury to advance to the semifinals where he met No. 12 Daren Burns of UNC Greensboro. He won easily by major decision, 15-4, and then won by fall in the second period in the title bout against Virginia's Brent Jones.
Taylor is now 18-2 on the season with a team-high 11 pins.
No. 22 Maryland (7-3) gets back into dual action on Thursday, January 10 when it travels to Navy to face the No. 21 Midshipmen in Annapolis.
