COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland wrestling team will get to see how it compares with the nation's best Saturday at the Jorneymen/Brute Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y. The Terrapins will face Drexel at 9 a.m., No. 1 Iowa at 11 a.m. and No. 5 Missouri at 1 p.m.
Maryland (1-2-1) is competing in its first dual since falling at Lehigh November 9.
Combined, the Terps could face as many as 14 individually-ranked wrestlers Saturday. With three ranked wrestlers of their own, the Terps should have a good feel of where they stand at the end of the day.
"I am very excited to see how we do against some of the best teams in the nation," Maryland head coach Kerry McCoy said. "We've had a great week of training, so now we will have to go out and see what happens."
The Drexel Dragons feature a pair of ranked wrestlers at 125 and 197 pounds, respectively. The 197-pound showdown will feature a rematch of No. 2 Hudson Taylor and No. 10 Jon Oplinger. Taylor had little trouble with Oplinger two weeks ago at the East Stroudsburg Open, winning 11-0.
The top-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes have seven ranked wrestlers. The 141-pound tilt will showcase a pair of ranked competitors, with Maryland's Alex Krom, ranked 15th, faces No. 6 Alex Tsirtsis. Taylor should face another top-20 foe against Iowa in No. 19 Chad Beatty.
Missouri boasts five top-20 performers. Taylor will be tested yet again at 197 with No. 6 Max Askren expected to be on the mat for the Tigers.
Maryland had an excellent showing at the Northeast Duals a season ago, winning two of three duals, including an upset of then-No. 5 Michigan.
