AKRON, Ohio - University of Maryland wrestlers Mike Letts and Patrick Gilmore placed fourth and fifth, respectively, at last weekend's ASICS University & FILA Cadet National Championships in Akron, Ohio, putting them in position to qualify for an international wrestling tour in the process.
Letts, a 174-pound junior who redshirted last season, won seven of nine matches in the 84 kilogram bracket, winning one match each by technical fall and fall. Letts' two losses came via decision by a combined margin of only three points.
Gilmore, a sophomore heavyweight, went 6-2 in eight matches at 120 kilograms. Seven of Gilmore's eighth matches were decided by decision, including a 4-1 tiebreaker victory along the way. Gilmore's only non-decision came in the fifth-place match, which he was awarded by injury default.
Letts and Gilmore were two in a long list of Maryland grapplers competing in the event. Other Terps who participated include: Matt Bogusz, Owen Duffy, Mike Hromada, Kyle John, Jon Kohler, Dex Lederer, Brian Letters, Matt MacLean, Bradley Nielson, Tommy Sitar, Chris Stinnett, Pat Strizki, Josh Asper and Corey Peltier.
