UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Redshirt sophomore Stephen Bell improved his individual record to 4-0 with a win at 133 pounds, but the Maryland wrestling team lost at No. 11 Penn State, 34-3, on November 11. The Nittany Lions won nine of the 10 matches in their season opener en route to the win.
Bell was the lone winner for the Terps, recording a 12-11 decision against Tim Haas. Haas entered the third period with an 8-6 edge over Bell, who chose to start down. He quickly scored a reversal to tie the score. Haas escaped with 1:40 left in regulation to take the lead back, but Bell notched another takedown with under a minute to go to regain the lead, 10-9. Haas escaped before the final whistle to send it into overtime.
Neither wrestler could get the win in overtime and in the first tiebreaker, Haas chose down and escaped to take an 11-10 lead. Bell also chose down in the second tiebreaker and Haas almost rode him out for the win, but Bell reversed with one second remaining to take the 12-11 decision.
Bell tied the match at 3-3 after two matches, but Penn State's powerful lineup featured five more ranked wrestlers in the final eight matches. The Nittany Lions scored a pair of major decisions, a technical fall, and a pin to ease to the 34-3 win.
Maryland (2-2) will travel to Ithaca, N.Y. on Saturday, November 17 for the Body Bar Systems Invitational.
