COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Tom Miller, a University of Maryland All-American who has spent the past six seasons on the Terps' coaching staff, has been named the Terrapins' head wrestling coach, athletics director Deborah A. Yow announced.

Miller replaces John McHugh, who retired following the 2003 season after 25 years guiding the Terps.

"Tom Miller is well-qualified and a terrific fit to lead Maryland wrestling," said Yow. "Given his familiarity with the university and local wrestling community as a current Terp assistant, he will quickly assume the challenge of continuing the Terps' climb back to national prominence."

The 34-year-old Miller spent the past six seasons on the Terps' wrestling staff, including the last two as McHugh's top assistant. A 1992 graduate of the University of Maryland with a degree in marketing and transportation, Miller was a five-time Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Scholar-Athlete.

This past summer, Miller was voted to the ACC's 50th anniversary wrestling team which was composed of the all-time wrestling greats in the ACC. He won ACC championships at 142 pounds in 1991 and 1992, and finished third nationally at the 1992 NCAA Wrestling Championships to earn All-America honors. The two-time team captain (1991 and 1992) registered 98 career victories and was named the Terps' Outstanding Wrestler his final two seasons.

Said Miller, "I am extremely proud and look forward to leading the Terrapin wrestling program. Maryland provides an academic and athletic experience that is second to none. Together with the Comcast Center's state-of-the-art wrestling facilities, we will recruit and develop the best local and national student-athletes."

During his time on the Terrapins' coaching staff, Miller has been involved in all facets of the program, including serving as the team's lead recruiter. The Terps' 2002 class was judged 21st in the nation by one recruiting analyst.

A native of Pennsylvania, Miller was a state champion at Elizabethtown High School and later was inducted into the Elizabethtown Area High School Wrestling Hall of Fame, District III Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the Lancaster-Lebanon Wrestling Hall of Fame.
