Terp Wrestlers Drop A Pair Of Duals

Feb. 4, 2006

BETHLEHEM. Pa. - The Maryland Terrapin wrestling team dropped a pair of duals against nationally ranked opponents Saturday afternoon at Leeman-Turner Arena on the campus of Lehigh University. Fourteenth-ranked Lehigh defeated the Terps, 36-6, while No. 21 Hofstra came away with a 35-10 victory.

In the first bout between the Terps and the Moutain Hawks, Adam DeCosmo came out in a big way pinning Dave Nakasone just 1:29 into the match. It was all Lehigh the rest of the way, though, as the Mountain Hawks swept the next nine bouts (including two forfeits at 174 and heavyweight). Seventeenth-ranked Matt Cassidy held off Jerry Afari to win at 197 pounds, 12-9, and John Stout edged Brendan Byrne at 133 pounds, 5-4. In another close bout, 16th-ranked Matt Ciasulli scored the only point in his match with Andrew Schlaffer to win, 1-0.

Against the Pride, DeCosmo saw his eight-match winning streak come to a halt, losing 3-1 in overtime. Trailing 22-0 after forfeiting at heavyweight, the Terps' James Knox benefitted from a forfeit to get the Terps on the board. Byrne then followed that up with a 15-4 major decision. However, Hofstra closed with three straight wins to close out the dual.
