Red and Black Wrestle Offs Set For Saturday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The 6th-ranked University of Maryland wrestling team will hold the annual Red and Black Wrestle Offs 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Comcast Pavilion.

The yearly exhibition pits the Terrapins' roster against itself, dividing it into a red team and black team, and helps determine the starter at each weight division. It is the only exhibition before the season gets underway next Saturday at the Buffalo Open in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Terps will honor all Maryland conference champions in attendance prior to the Wrestle Offs. Former conference champions who would like to be recognized are encouraged to contact assistant coach Todd Beckerman at After the match, a social will be held in Heritage Hall to recognize the 2009 ACC Championship team and present championship rings.

Seven Maryland wrestlers are ranked in the top 25 in their weight class by various wrestling publications heading into the season.

All-American Hudson Taylor is ranked No. 3 by every publication after finishing third nationally for the second consecutive season. All-American Alex Krom is ranked as high as second and All-American Steven Bell is ranked as high as fourth. Mike Letts is also ranked as high as No. 4.The other ranked wrestlers include Josh Asper (165), Patrick Gilmore (Heavyweight), and Brian Letters (157 pounds).

Admission to the Red & Black Wrestle Offs is free.
