COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland wrestling team will make the short trip to Washington, D.C., Saturday evening for a 7 p.m. Valentines night matchup with regional rival American University.
The Terrapins (7-8-1) are looking to get back to .500 going into the regular season's final weekend next week. The Eagles come into the match receiving votes in the USA Today/InterMat poll, so the Terps have a difficult task ahead of them. The Eagles are 11-4 overall and a perfect 4-0 at home.
"This match is another good one for the local fans. It should be a great match," Maryland head coach Kerry McCoy said. "American is having a good season, so it will be nice if we can compete well against them."
Thanks to three pins and a pair of forfeits, the Terps posted a dominant 37-14 victory over the Eagles a season ago in College Park. However, there are no scheduled rematches from last year's bout.
However, the Eagles seem to have a big advantage at 149 and 174 pounds in 12th-ranked Kyle Borshoff (149) and No. 2 Mike Cannon (174). Borshoff will take on mid-year transfer Chris Stinnett in his first collegiate dual. Cannon will take on youngster Bradley Nielson at 174 pounds.
With favorable matchups at 197 pounds and heavyweight in No. 10 Hudson Taylor and Patrick Gilmore, the key to the match could come down to tossups at 157 and 165 pounds. Kyle John has shown dramatic improvement in recent weeks and gives the Terps a chance to win at 157 pounds against Patrick Graham. At 165 pounds, Brian Letters faces Christopher Stout in a pivotal match.
