GREENSBORO, N.C. - Redshirt sophomore Hudson Taylor was named the ACC Wrestler of the Week after going 3-0 at the Northeast Duals on Saturday with three falls. Taylor's pin at 197 pounds against No. 5 Michigan was vital to the best win in program history, a come-from-behind 18-16 victory. A Maryland wrestler has now been named Wrestler of the Week three of the four times the award has been given out this season.
Taylor dominated his competition on Saturday at the Journeymen/BRUTE Northeast Duals by pinning each of the three opponents he faced. Seven of his nine wins this season have come by way of fall. His biggest pin this season came in the middle of a thrilling come-from-behind win against No. 5 Michigan. With the Terps down 16-9 with two matches to go, he pinned Anthony Biondo in the first period to make it 16-15. Maryland eventually won 18-16 with a decision at heavyweight. He then scored a second period fall against Appalachian State before concluding the day with another pin, this time against Vincenzo DiDona of No. 9 Central Michigan.
Two other Terps have also garnered ACC Wrestler of the Week honors. Sophomore Mike Letts was named the first one of 2007-08 on November 6 and redshirt junior Josh Haines earned the award last week. Taylor shared the award with John Barone of Duke who went 5-0 last week.
With Maryland's win against the Wolverines, it is starting to earn national attention. The Terps are ranked 25th in the nation by Wrestling International Newsmagazine (WIN) and five wrestlers are ranked in the top 20. Redshirt sophomore Stephen Bell is ranked No. 19 at 133 pounds, freshman Eric Medina slides in at No. 20 at 149, sophomore Mike Letts is No. 7 at 174 pounds, redshirt sophomore Josh Haines jumped to No. 11 at 184, and Taylor is ranked No. 9 at 197 pounds.
The Terps (4-3) will host their first dual of the season on Sunday, December 2 at 2:00 p.m. when Lehigh visits the Comcast Center.
