TROY, N.Y. - The 16th-ranked Maryland wrestling team won two of three duals Saturday at the Journeymen/Asics Northeast Duals at Hudson Valley Community College with victories over Columbia and No. 23 Purdue. The Terps (4-1) fell in their final dual of the day to No. 6 Illinois.
The Terps opened the event against Ivy League foe Columbia. For Maryland, the highlight of the dual was a technical fall for 10th-ranked Jimmy Sheptock at 184 followed by a Ty Snook pin at 197 to clinch a 27-10 victory for the Terps.
Shane Gentry (125), Geoffrey Alexander (133) and Frank Goodwin (141) got Maryland off to fast start. Gentry and Goodwin sandwiched decisions around a major decision for 15th-ranked Alexander over Joe Moita to give the Terps a 10-0 lead.
Three straight victories for the Lions at 149, 157 and 165 tied the match at 10. But third-ranked Josh Asper ended the Columbia run with a 9-3 decision over 13th-ranked Stephen West. Sheptock followed with a technical fall over Drew Rebling to increase Maryland's lead to eight. Snook clinched the win with a pin with 25 seconds remaining in the final period against Nick Mills.
Carl Buchholz capped the dual with a 7-3 decision over Chris Manna at 285.
In round two, the Terps faced off with 23rd-ranked Purdue. Maryland would get impressive decisions in favor of Gentry and Alexander at 125 and 133, respectively, to begin the dual. Both wrestlers knocked off ranked opponents. Gentry took care of No. 19 Camden Eppert by a 5-4 margin, and Alexander defeated 2010 All-American Cashé Quiroga, who is ranked eighth, by a 9-3 margin.
The Boilermakers rattled off four consecutive victories to earn a 16-6 lead. Asper got the Terps back on track with a 16-4 major decision over Chad Welch. Sheptock followed with major decision of his own to trim the Boilermaker lead to two points.
After No. 18 Braden Atwood defeated 10th-ranked Christian Boley at 197, Purdue held a 19-14 advantage and only needed to avoid a pin to earn the win. Fortunately for the Terps, Buchholz rose to the occasion with a pin of Preston Quam 24 seconds into the heavyweight match to propel Maryland to a 20-19 win.
Maryland's final match of the day pitted it against Big Ten powerhouse Illinois. In a matchup that featured 10 nationally ranked wrestlers, the Fighting Illini walked away with a 31-6 victory.
For the Terps, Sheptock completed an undefeated day with a 9-2 decision over 11th-ranked Tony Dallago. Danny Orem also picked up a decision over Matt Nora at 157.
In a rematch of the NWCA All-Star Classic, sixth-ranked Jordan Blanton gained a measure of revenge over Asper. Asper defeated the two-time All-American on Nov. 3 by a 3-1 margin. On Saturday, Blanton defeated Asper by the same scoreline.
The Terps will be back in action on Sunday, Dec. 2 at the Nittany Lion Open at Penn State University.
