Senior Jimmy Sheptock leads a group of four Maryland wrestlers ranked in the first NCAA coaches' panel rankings, released Thursday.
Sheptock, who became the first Terrapin to ever attain a No. 1 national ranking this season, is the top-ranked wrestler at 184 pounds. Senior Christian Boley slotted in at No. 8 at 197 pounds. Heavyweight Spencer Myers is ranked No. 9 in his weight class while Shyheim Brown is the 30th-ranked 141-pound competitor.
The coaches’ panel ranking is the first of three that will be released over the course of the year. Wrestlers are measured by winning percentage, ratings percentage index (RPI) and coaches’ ranking. In order to be eligible for the rankings, wrestlers must have participated in at least five matches against Division I opponents in the weight class and have wrestled in the last 30 days.
The final rankings will be one of the aspects of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship, which will take place March 20-22 at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla.
