COLLEGE PARK, Md. - In front of a spirited crowd during Senior Day inside Ritchie Coliseum, the Maryland wrestling team (9-3, 1-2 ACC) defeated ACC rival Duke (5-4, 0-2 ACC), 20-16. Before the match, Maryland's five seniors, Dan Barsnica (Manalapan, N.J.), Bryan Robinovitz (Hillsborough, N.J.), Joe Guzzio (Greensboro, N.C.), Josh Weidman (Hershey, Pa.) and Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.) were honored. The Terps got off to a hot start, winning five of the first six matches. Duke stormed back to capture the final four bouts to pull within four points, but Maryland's big early lead was too tough to overcome as the Terps escaped with the victory, giving Coach McHugh's squad its first ACC win of the season.
Heavyweight Jeremy Duncan (Platte City, Mo.) started things off, earning three points for Maryland in the first match with a 7-1 decision over Levi Karnehm. The Blue Devils countered at 125 pounds when Tommy Hoang defeated freshman Mike Lupa (Westbury, N.Y.) by a 10-1 major decision.
In the closest bout of the afternoon, Guzzio regained the lead for the Terps with a 2-1 decision over Stuart Holzer. The victory was Guzzio's 21st of the season. York, Maryland's all-time winningest wrestler, notched victory No. 33 of the season with a 16-4 major decision over Harry Clarke at 141 pounds, extending his current match winning streak to eight.
Freshman Adam James (Silver Spring, Md.) brought the crowd to its feet when he pinned Luke Palmisano in 6:24 at 149 pounds for his 20th win of the year. For James, the fall was his fourth of the season, good for fifth on the team. The Blue Devils were deducted one point following the match for unsportsmanlike conduct. At 157 pounds, freshman John Antonelli (Norristown, Pa.) earned his seventh dual match victory of the season with a 14-4 major decision over Ben Balmages to give the Terps an insurmountable 17-point lead with four matches remaining.
In the 165-pound weight class, Mike Mitchell of Duke earned a 6-5 decision over Weidman. Tim Marcantonio defeated Maryland's Pat Cissne (Huntington Valley, Pa.), 3-2, at 174 pounds, bringing Duke within 11 points with two bouts remaining. At 184 pounds, Duke's Frank Cornely earned a 9-4 decision over Terp junior Jake Stork (Mohrsville, Pa.). Junior Bob Vorhies (Morris Knolls, N.J.) lost to Daegan Smith by a 12-4 major decision in the final match.
With their five-match homestand complete, the Terps travel to Old Dominion to try to capture their ninth non-conference victory of the season Thursday night. Match time is 7 p.m.
