CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Virginia Cavaliers (5-10, 2-2 ACC) defeated the Maryland wrestling team (10-4, 1-3 ACC), 18-16, Wednesday night at the Memorial Gymnasium in Charlottesville. The loss is the third for the Terps in ACC competition.
Virginia opened up an early, 7-0, lead over the Terps, winning the first two matches. At the heavyweight position, sophomore Jeremy Duncan (Platte City, Mo.) lost to Virginia's Ryan Painter by a close, 5-4, decision. In the second bout of the evening, Byron Dunlap of UVA earned a 10-2 major decision over freshman Mike Lupa (Westbury, N.Y.) at 125 pounds.
Maryland rebounded, winning the next two bouts to take a 9-7 lead after four matches. At 133 pounds, senior Joe Guzzio (Greensboro, N.C.) notched his tenth fall of the season, pinning Ryan Stewart in 40 seconds. Senior co-captain Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.) defeated Virginia's Bob Seidel by a 4-2 decision at 141 pounds.
Virginia started to pull away picking up victories in the next four matches, opening an 18-9 lead over the Terps heading into the final two bouts. Paul Dunstan beat Maryland freshman Adam James (Silver Spring, Md.) by a 12-9 decision, snapping James' three-match win streak at 149 pounds. In the 157-pound match, freshman John Antonelli (Norristown, Pa.) lost to Virginia's Tim Foley, 8-3. Following the match, Maryland was deducted one team point for unsportsmanlike conduct. Virginia's Don Carlo-Clauss defeated senior Josh Weidman (Hershey, Pa.) by a 4-2 decision in overtime at 165 pounds. Maryland's Mark Reid (Medford, N.J.) lost to Brian Muir, 7-4, at 174 pounds.
With only two matches remaining, Maryland faced a nine-point deficit. The Terps came close, winning the final two matches, but could not muster enough points to earn the victory. At 184 pounds, Terrapin junior Jake Stork (Mohrsville, Pa.) earned a 10-1 major decision over Jimi Massey. For Stork, it is his second victory over the Cavalier wrestler this season after losing to Massey in last season's ACC Championships.
