COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland wrestling team began its 2011-12 season Sunday with the Red and Black Wrestle-Offs at Comcast Pavilion. The Black team defeated the Red team 34-26 for the second consecutive year.
"It's always good to get in front of a crowd with a real referee," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "For some guys it was a little bit of an eye-opener for them. The season is here. I'm excited that we got this under our belts, now we got to get ready for next week."
The event began with two matches at 125 pounds. Junior Brian Marcoux and sophomore Shane Gentry opened the wrestle-offs. Gentry picked up three points for the Black team with 7-4 decision. In the second match, sophomore Jenkins Monzey scored three points for the Black team after he held off freshman Paul O'Neill by one point who scored a takedown and an escape late in the third period.
Freshman Geoffrey Alexander put the Black team up 10-0 after defeating sophomore Kenneth Collado by major decision. Freshman Lou Mascola got the Red team on the board with a tight 2-1 decision over redshirt sophomore Danny O'Malley.
Sophomore Ben Dorsay cut the Black lead to 10-9 after pinning redshirt sophomore Danny Orem with 57 seconds remaining in the match. The Red team went ahead by two points after freshman Shane Arechiga scored a takedown late in the third period to earn a 10-5 decision over freshman Sean O'Malley.
The Black team stopped Red's momentum when senior Kyle John defeated redshirt sophomore Domenic DeRobertis by decision, and freshman Nick Lobue pinned freshman Kyle Dehaut to put the Black team in front 19-12.
At 165 pounds, Asper earned four points for the Red team after defeating junior Shawn Mazzarone by technical fall setting the stage for one of the most anticipated matches of the day.
Redshirt sophomore Jimmy Sheptock squared off against senior Corey Peltier at 174 pounds. With Peltier leading 4-3 late in the second period, Sheptock scored a takedown. Sheptock extended his lead to 7-4 in the third frame and held off a late takedown attempt by Peltier to win a 7-5 decision and bring the Red team even.
"They battled back and forth," said McCoy. "I didn't expect the match to be as high scoring as it was. They have been wrestling pretty controlled matches. For both of them to go out there and score takedowns, and both get off the bottom, it was good to see they can open up."
Sophomore Tony Gardner put the Red team in front by four points by taking a major decision over freshman Josh Snook. Redshirt sophomore Alex Pagnotta answered for the Black team by scoring two takedowns in overtime to earn a 5-3 decision over sophomore Rob Fitzgerald.
In the second match at 184 pounds, redshirt sophomore Ty Snook put the Black team in the lead for good with a first period pin of freshman Conor Wetzel. The Red team made the final match interesting after redshirt sophomore Christian Boley came from behind to earn a 3-2 decision over redshirt sophomore Dallas Brown to cut the Black lead to 28-26.
