#13 Terps Win In-State Rivalry

Jan. 21, 2012

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Maryland wrestling team won six matches and 12th-ranked senior Kyle John recorded his seventh pin-fall of the season as the Terps (11-0) defeated in-state rival Navy Friday night at Alumni Hall.

The Terps led 7-6 after splitting the first four matches with the Midshipmen. After surrendering an early takedown, the 157-pound John pinned Bobby Barnhisel with 1:36 remaining in the first period. For John, it's his seventh pin-fall of the season which is the highest single-season total of his career.

"This was a great win," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "Navy is such a big rivalry, and it feels so good to come out on top, especially in Annapolis. Kyle getting another pin was huge. I'm really happy with the effort we are giving and the results are showing."

Sophomore Frank Goodwin set the stage for John. After Aaron Kalil earned a 5-3 decision over Geoffrey Alexander to tie the match, Goodwin earned the first bonus points of the evening with a 10-2 major decision over Raymond Borja. Goodwin entered the second period leading 3-2, but quickly took control of the match with an escape, takedown and 3-point near-fall within a 1:30 of the second period.

At 165 pounds, second-ranked Josh Asper remained undefeated and improved his record to 19-0 after a 9-4 decision over Mike Brant.

Fifteenth-ranked Jimmy Sheptock picked up the second major decision of the night over James Mannier. Sheptock used a four-point second period to distance himself and win 12-2.

At 197, fifth-ranked Christian Boley won his team-leading 24th match with an 11-7 decision over Paul Rands to clinch the dual-meet.

The Terps return home Sunday to face ACC-rival NC State at 2 p.m. at Comcast Pavilion.
