TEMPE, Ariz. - Second-ranked junior Josh Asper faced third-ranked Shane Onufer of Wyoming for the second consecutive year in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Star Classic on Monday night at Arizona State University, and for the second consecutive year, Asper earned a victory. Asper and sophomore Spencer Myers participated in the annual event that features some of the top collegiate wrestlers in the country.
At 165 pounds, Asper earned a 3-2 decision over Onufer at the 2010 NWCA All-Star Classic and picked up right where he left off last year. The Parkton, Md., native scored an early takedown in the first period and led 2-1.
Asper took control of the match in the second period with an escape and a takedown at the edge of the mat to go up 5-1, but had to hold off a late surge by Onufer to win a 6-4 decision.
At 285 pounds, sixth-ranked Myers battled second-ranked Ryan Flores of American. Flores jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first period and went on to win the match 11-2.
Fifteen universities were represented in the event, Maryland had two wrestlers compete along with American, Illinois, Oklahoma State and Wyoming.
The Terps return to the mat on Saturday, Nov. 26 at the Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y. Maryland will face Bucknell at 11:15 a.m., Northern Iowa at 1:40 p.m., and Central Michigan at 3:30 p.m.
