No. 13 Terps Remain Unbeaten

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The 13th-ranked Maryland wrestling team improved its record to 8-0 with a 21-15 victory over No. 24 Penn at The Palestra Sunday afternoon. After dropping three of the first four matches, the Terps' middleweights responded to win five of the last six to earn the team's eighth win.

Penn trimmed Maryland's lead to three heading into the heavyweight matchup after eighth-ranked Micah Burak earned a pin at 197. But 14th-ranked Spencer Myers clinched the win with a 9-3 decision.

"We are excited about the win," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "We finished the semester strong. Now the team we'll get some time to focus on finals and get ready for the second half of the season."

Shane Gentry opened the meet with a 5-4 decision over Geoffrey Bostany at 125 to give Maryland a 3-0 lead. Bostany opened the scoring with a takedown in the first period. Gentry answered with a reversal and a takedown to gain a 4-2 advantage. After a scoreless second period, Bostany added a late takedown in the third period to tie the match, but Gentry held a riding time advantage to claim the final point.

At 157, 14th-ranked Kyle John snapped Penn's three-match winning streak with a major decision over Troy Hernandez. John held a 7-0 lead heading into the third period and added three takedowns and an escape to earn valuable bonus points.

Second-ranked Josh Asper won his team-leading 16th match of the season at 165. Asper grinded out a decision over Lorenzo Thomas with two escapes and a takedown in the third period.

At 174, 16th-ranked Jimmy Sheptock continued his strong wrestling by winning an important five points for Maryland with 15-0 technical fall over Ian Korb. Sheptock aggressively began the match with eight first-period points including two 3-point near-falls.

Ty Snook fought off a late surge by Erich Smith to win a 7-6 decision at 184 to stretch Maryland's lead to 18-9.

Maryland is off until after Christmas when the Terps travel to Evanston, Ill., for the prestigious Midlands Championships hosted by Northwestern.
