WILKES-BARRE, Pa.- Three Maryland wrestlers defeated opponents in the semifinials to advance to the championship matches Saturday, Dec. 29 at the Wilkes University Open. Seniors Josh Weidman (Hersey, Pa.) and Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.) went on to first place victories at the match, however redshirt-junior Jake Stork (Mohrsville, Pa.) fell in the championship battle.
At 141, York won four matches on Friday to reach the semifinals. The three-time ACC champion then defeated Eric Narkiewicz of Penn St 9-2 by decision in the semifinal round. In the championship round, York decisioned Michigan's Andy Simmons 3-2 to take the victory.
Weidman also wrestled well after winning three matches on Friday to reach the semifinals at 165. The two-time NCAA qualifier decisioned Navy's Luke Lazzo to advance to the championship round, where he defeated unattached wrestler Ted Rakar by a 3-0 decision.
After pinning all three of his opponents to reach the semifinals at 184, Stork went on to defeat Cornell's Mark McGaurn in the semifinal round 14-5.. In the championship, Stork fell by major decision to Buffalo's Garret Bontempo, 8-0.
The Terps' next match will be Saturday, Jan. 5 at the Millersville Invitational in Millersville, Pa., beginning at 9 a.m.
