COLUMBIA, Mo. -The Maryland wrestling team split two matches Sunday against Missouri and Wyoming in the regional round of the 2013 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA)/Cliff Keen National Duals.

In the first match of the day the Terps (13-8, 3-2 ACC) fell to sixth-ranked Missouri 27-13, while defeating the 20th-ranked Cowboys 20-12 in the third-place match.

Josh Asper, ranked fifth nationally at 174, won both of his matches by decision including a 3-1 victory over 13th-ranked Todd Porter of Missouri. At 184, sixth-ranked Jimmy Sheptock won a pair of major decisions including a 10-2 victory over 13th-ranked Johnny Eblen of Missouri.

Christian Boley was the other Terp who won both of his matches Sunday, as 14th-ranked Boley pinned 11th-ranked Brent Haynes of Missouri in just 2:59, as well as picking up a 13-3 major decision over Michael Poulos of Wyoming.

"Today was a good day overall," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "Missouri is really good and I we may have given them a little too much respect because of it.  We were capable of winning a couple more matches.

"The guys bounced back to beat a tough Wyoming team.  They wrestled better in that match.  We are doing the right stuff and getting better everyday.  I am excited for the next few weeks of preparation for the post season."

In the first match of the day, the Terps fell behind early with the Tigers winning the first six matches. Maryland got on the board at 174 with Asper scoring all three points in the third period, including a takedown with just 10 seconds left, to earn the 3-1 decision over Porter.

At 184, Sheptock closed the gap to 21-7 with a 10-2 major decision over Shane Woods. Sheptock's used three takedowns and a two-point near fall in his decision. Despite a Boley pin at 197, the Terps were still left with a 27-13 loss to the Tigers.

In the second match of the day, the Terps responded despite going down early to the Cowboys. After going down 3-0, 12th-ranked Geoffrey Alexander earned the 11-7 decision, including four takedowns, over Kasey Garnhart to even things up at 3-3.

After a narrow 5-4 decision in favor the Cowboys at 141, Lou Mascola used a late reversal to lock it up in his 4-2 decision over Brandon Richardson at 149.

Again the Terps responded after losing the next two weight classes, Asper used a late takedown and riding time to pull out a 9-5 decision at 174 to cut the gap to three heading into the final three weight classes.

Sheptock jumped out to an early 7-1 lead using a takedown, a three-point near fall, and a two-point near fall in the first period on his way to his second major decision of the day to put the Terps ahead of the Cowboys 13-12 heading into Boley at 197.

Boley answered using five takedowns and riding time on his way to a 13-3 major decision over Michael Poulos to put the Terps up 16-12 heading into the final match of the day. Dallas Brown ensured a Maryland victory with a late escape to pull out a 7-5 decision at heavy weight to give the Terps a 20-12 victory over the Cowboys.
