Wrestlers Open Dual Season With Three Wins At Warrior Duals

Jan. 12, 2002

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - The Maryland wrestling team (3-0, 0-0 ACC) opened the 2002 dual season on Saturday, sweeping the competition. The Terps won all three matches they wrestled in at the Warrior Duals, beating the Virginia Millitary Institute, Binghamton and James Madison inside Koehler Field House on the campus of East Stroudsburg University.

Maryland opened the day with a 22-13 victory over VMI (4-3), with the Terps taking seven of the ten matches in the contest. In the second session, coach McHugh's squad knocked off Binghamton (2-6) 25-12. The wrestlers earned the three-match sweep against James Madison (2-1), 33-7, in the third and final session of the day.

Junior Jake Stork (Mohrsville, Pa.) was one of five Maryland wrestlers to win all three of his matches on Saturday. He recorded two pins on the day against Mark Tse of Binghamton in 1:20 and James Madison's Dave Colabella in 6:28 for the second straight week. Stork's two pins on Saturday give him a team-high 13 for the season, eclipsing his mark of 12 he earned all of last season.

Also recording a three-match sweep in East Stroudsburg was senior Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.), who decisioned all his opponents, including an 8-3 decision of James Madison's Pat Diaz, who York beat in the final round last week to earn the 141-pound championship at the Millersville Invitational. York has now won his last 13 matches. His three wins on Saturday give him a team-high 25 for the season.

Senior Josh Weidman (Hershey, Pa.) won all his matches, major decisoning two of his three opponents. The 165-pound grappler beat Shannon Meehan of VMI by a 9-1 major decision before overpowering Beau Bruno of Binghamton by a 16-2 major decision.

Redshirt senior Joe Guzzio (Greensboro, N.C.) won three matches at 133-pounds to give him 14 wins on the year. He recorded his fifth fall of the season, pinning Jon Heusdash of James Madison in 4:17. Guzzio's victory over Heusdash was the second in a week as the Greensboro native beat Heusdash last week at the Millersville Invitational. Redshirt sophomore Matt Pandullo (Severn, Md.) improved his season record to 7-4 on Saturday with three victories at 125-pounds.

The Terps will have little time to celebrate their success in East Stroudsburg as they return to the mats Wednesday to face Navy in Annapolis.
