COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland wrestling team (6-3, 0-2 ACC) fell to ACC leader North Carolina (10-2, 3-0 ACC) Saturday at Cole Field House, snapping the Terps' win streak at four. North Carolina took seven of the ten bouts to secure the win, keeping its conference record perfect.
North Carolina took an early, 4-0, lead after James O'Connor's 15-3 major decision over freshman John Antonelli (Norristown, Pa.) at 157 pounds. Senior co-captain Josh Weidman (Hershey, Pa.) brought Maryland within one point with his 3-1 decision over UNC's Chris DiGuiseppe. The see-saw battle continued as North Carolina took a three point advantage following Mark Canty's, 11-7, decision over Mark Reid (Medford, N.J.). The Terps cut into the lead after junior Jake Stork (Mohrsville, Pa.) recorded his 26th win of the season with a 5-3 decision over Dustin Heist.
The Tar Heels pulled away, capturing the next four matches to secure the victory. Junior Bob Vorhies (Morris Knolls, N.J.) lost to Nick Richmond, 13-4, at 197. In the heavyweight class North Carolina's Ryan Adams downed sophomore Jeremy Duncan (Platte City, Mo.) by a 5-2 decision. In his second dual meet start, freshman Mike Lupa (Westbury, N.Y.) lost to Chris Rodrigues by a 14-4 major decision. Evan Sola of North Carolina decisioned senior Joe Guzzio (Greensboro, N.C.), 21-6' in the 133 pound weight class.
Senior co-captain Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.) faced a very familiar opponent Saturday. The three-time ACC champion squared off against North Carolina's Brad Byers for the seventh time in his career. York decisioned Byers, 7-2, to capture his fourth career victory over the North Carolina wrestler. Saturday's win is the fifth straight in dual competition for York, who became Maryland's all-time winningest wrestler earlier this season. He recorded his 30th win of the season, improving his dual meet mark to 8-1.
Maryland will return to action Wednesday against American at 7 p.m. in Ritchie Coliseum. Wednesday's match will be the third match of a four-meet homestand for the Terps.
