MARYLAND WELCOMES NORTH CAROLINA TO COLLEGE PARK

Following a midweek victory over Delaware, Maryland welcomes 13th-ranked North Carolina to Shipley Field at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium for its first Atlantic Coast Conference home series of the season. Game one is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday with game two scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. The series concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m.

TERRAPIN TAILS

- After going 1-2 in Tallahassee last weekend against second-ranked Florida State, Maryland bounced back with a 10-1 victory over Delaware on Tuesday. The Terps banged out 12 hits, their fifth double-digit hit total of the season. Kyle Convissar and Blake Schmit each had three hits in the win for the Terps.

- Maryland handed Florida State only its second loss of the season on Saturday in a 5-1 victory. Freshman right hander Mike Shawaryn held the Seminoles’ ACC-leading offense to one run on six hits over a career-best 7-1/3 innings while posting five Ks.

- On the season, Shawaryn is one of four pitchers in the ACC to start the season 4-0 and is the only freshman among the group. In addition, his 0.75 ERA ranks third in the ACC.

- Maryland’s .189 opponent batting average is the lowest in the ACC and the squad sports two of the top-10 pitchers in the conference in that category. Jake Stinnett is holding opposing batters to an ACC-best .105 average, while Shawaryn ranks 10th with a .179 average.

- Maryland’s pitching staff is only surrendering an average of 5.86 hits per game, a mark which leads the ACC.

- After missing the early portion of the season due to injury, Convissar has returned and provided a spark to the Terrapin lineup. Convissar is batting a team-best .438 in his last 10 games and an even better .462 in his last five. During the 10-game stretch, Convissar hit his first home run of the season (at Florida State, 3/8) and has five runs scored and four RBI.

- The Terps have four players with four or more stolen bases this season led by Schmit’s seven. The senior shortstop is tied for third in the ACC. As a team, Maryland has 27 stolen bases, which is second in the conference.

- Against UMass, right hander Jake Stinnett became the seventh Maryland pitcher all-time to throw a no-hitter and the first since Scott Swinson no-hit Delaware in Newark on May 13, 2008. It marked the first Maryland no-hitter at home since five Terrapin pitchers combined to no-hit Coppin State on March 28, 2007.

SERIES HISTORY

The Terps welcome the Tar Heels to College Park for the first of five home ACC series in 2014, three of which occur in the month of March.

Maryland trails the all-time series with the Tar Heels 131-49 with UNC holding a 50-34 advantage at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.

The Terps have dropped three straight to the Tar Heels after UNC swept the series last season in Chapel Hill. The Heels were the only ACC team to sweep Maryland last season.

The two teams last met in College Park in 2012. Maryland won the final game of the three-game series, 1-0. The Terps last series victory over the Tar Heels occurred in 2001 in College Park with Maryland winning two of three.
