ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Senior Mary Cushman’s 30 kills were not enough Friday as the Maryland volleyball team fell to No. 10 Michigan and No. 24 Ohio in a tough day of action to open the Michigan Invitational. The Terrapins return to action tomorrow against Marshall at 2:00 pm.
Michigan proved too strong for Maryland (8-3) in the nightcap as the Terps fell, 25-17, 25-19, 25-17. Cushman played well in the match, tallying 16 kills (.375 pct.), while setters Julia Anderson and Amy Dion combined for 27 assists.
The Wolverines’ displayed their offensive prowess throughout the contest, posting a .429 hitting percentage, including 13 kills on 18 attacks by Jennifer Cross. Lexi Dannemiller set the tone for Michigan with 21 assists.
Cushman led the way for the Terps in the team’s opening match against Ohio, tallying a match-high 14 kills in the defeat. Maryland battled with the Bobcats in the opening set and jumped out to a 24-23 advantage, but gave up three consecutive points to fall, 26-24. Ohio then won the next two sets, 25-21, 25-23.
Sarah Harper and Dion notched 18 digs and 20 assists, respectively, against the Bobcats. Harper moved into fourth all-time on the Maryland digs list (1,397).
